I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend. In Connecticut the sun finally came out from hiding.
I made a delicious (if I do say so myself) brunch for my mother to celebrate and we have a very enjoyable day. Adding watercress and sour cream to scrambled eggs was a win!
I am blessed to have my mother local, but I realize, it’s a difficult day for many.
That morning before going into brunch prep mode, I enjoyed scrolling Facebook and seeing all the mom posts. Hearts, flowers and lots of love!
In fact, there’s a pic of my lovely brunch table.
BUT, as is often the case, most of us put our best foot forward on social media. We look as if we have all our ducks in a row. Our table is beautifully set, classical music playing lightly in the background.
It’s so easy to fall into comparison mode and think that everyone’s life is Norman Rockwell-esque.
However, it’s rarely what it seems. It’s just a snapshot in time, and more often than not, the real story is rather messy.
It’s real life.
Take Mother’s Day for example…..
We may be mourning the loss of our mother. We may grieve over not being able to be a mother. We may have a difficult or non-existent relationship with our mother.
The kids may have been cranky, the potatoes burnt, or the house too messy to entertain in the first place.
It’s real life. And it’s messy.
I propose we stop the comparison trap. Enjoy the beauty, post away, but acknowledge that everyone has a behind the scenes show that’s not always so perfect.
